Bancakes

Bancakes

My web server has been operational for about a year now and I never really got around to cleaning out the CSF firewall banned IP’s. It’s not usually a big deal, but I wanted to see when I removed them, if the site would speed up. So I deleted about 450 IP’s from the deny field in hopes that maybe things will run a little better. Here is long, long list of IP’s that were denied.

Off to college

Off to college

Well after spending a year at community college, I can say that I was very bored. I took only classes I needed, and none that I wanted. I am hoping that, that will change at OSU. I have been living in a house off campus for almost a week now, and been to all of my classes at least once. While I was forced to take CS160, it is at least something, and I hope to get more involved with programming and possibly start to enjoy it. If not, I am in the same boat as MHCC, but only it is costing me twice as much and I am over 100 miles away from home.

My work role is kind of in limbo at the moment. My last work day was a week ago from today, and while I do not miss it, I miss having fast internet. Let’s face it, Comcast sucks. But I am happy to not be working or having to worry about anything that happens. I find myself sleeping better at nights when I am not stressed out about work, or worrying about the next day. That is probably soon to change once the homework starts piling up, but in the mean time, it is a chance for me to get caught up on some sleep that I did not gain over the summer.

Anyway, That is where I am now. College. Maybe I can get caught up on my goals and dreams of websites and servers again. Heh.

City of Sandy and XenServer

City of Sandy and XenServer

While I personally moved back over to VMware for my personal servers, the City of Sandy still uses Citrix for it’s virtual platform. While I had a dislike for it before, it is becoming more bearable and easier to deal with. The past few months have been me learning how to really work this hyper-visor properly. Along with XenDesktop, it has been quite a ride.

Mixed thoughts about NetApp – We have a small NetApp setup in our datacenter that is used for our file storage for the Xen environment. While it was hot stuff when we got it, it just doesn’t seem to have the performance that was promised. Heck, our small 18TB homemade storage server has more I/O capacity than the NetApp, even though it lacks more spindles. It is hard to say whether the NetApp is to blame, or the Citrix environment, but either way something is not operating as it should.

XenDesktop5 to 7 – A few months ago, XenDesktop7 was released, and boy was it about time. Our XenDesktop5 environment was falling apart, and we had users connecting through storefront, access gateway, secure access and some other web interface for only 35 virtual desktops. With XenDesktop7, there was a focus on more mobile and WAN usage, so maybe it could benefit our patrol officers, whom are using crappy MiFi’s on a crappy 3G Verizon connection. The transition was anything but smooth… At least for the first week. It took me about a week to find our why every XenDesktop conversion was failing, and it turns out my user profile name was too long, and the installer fatally errored and kicked me out, breaking the machine. I don’t know who puts a user profile length in place for a string that needs a user profile, but way to go Citrix! Anyway after that, the conversion took only another week and was much smoother. Now that everyone is moved over to storefront and XenDesktop7, things have settled down and are returning to normal.

XenServer 6.2 Upgrade – This is yet to happen. As of right now, one of my coworkers is on vacation, and we are waiting for him to return so we can finish this upgrade. Because XenServer 6.1 broke all of the XenDesktop environments, we had to wait for XenDesktop7 to come out and then upgrade XenServer. But since all of the desktops are now moved, we can continue with our upgrade plan and see if we get any performance boost. I am hoping that we will see dramatically higher I/O and VM performance. I would also like to see XenDesktop video quality increase, but that may just be a dream.

Other than that, not much has happened in the past few months. I have been accepted into OSU and I move down to Corvallis late September. But until I move, I will continue to work at the City and see what I can do to make things better…

Back to VMware

Back to VMware

A little less than a year ago, I moved my server environment over to Citrix’s Xenserver in an attempt to play around with XenDesktop, Netscaler and XenMotion.

My setup consisted of three x3650’s. Two as Xen hosts and one as a storage server. This system worked for most of a year, until OpenFiler busted and would stop working after a day of operation. In an attempt to fix it, I broke it even further and it broke everything. Being frustrated and having to catch a flight later that night, I shut down my system and decided to come up with a better way to handle everything. While on vacation I came to the conclusion that I need to do away with Citrix and move back to VMware. In doing so, it would effectively allow me to cut my power costs in half because I am only required one host for operation. This decision came with both good and bad. I would no longer be able to test and operate virtual desktops or live machine migration. Since ESXi does not allow any vSphere systems, I am stuck with just the hypervisor.

But, since I will be attending OSU this fall, I will be forced to decrease my server environment, and this is a better way to deal with it. By combining storage and VM’s in one box, it will make the system less likely to break or have issues.

As of right now, my environment is rebuilt. Running a very small test domain, I am not using as many virtual machines as I was before. But it has balanced out with work. I am working more and more with servers at work, and I no longer need to test and play with servers at my house because I can get experience at work.

Overall, I am much more satisfied with VMware, and it seems to be snappier, and much more stable than Xenserver. Both seem to be good, but I prefer VMware when it comes to management.

Frontier and CLEC service problems

Frontier and CLEC service problems

Last week I was given the task of canceling the remaining 70 fictitious loops that SandyNet once used for DSL service. Of course not having any background on how the heck to do, I go about trying to complete this task. I had little information besides some pre-orders of customers and their ATN numbers and zero experience. This was going to be a lot fun. I started away on trying to cancel some lines.

Day 1 – Having only used the Frontier VFO system one other time in my life, I had no idea what to do and what fields and forms did what. Out of probably a hundred different fields for information I had to fill out maybe 10. They are all abbreviation’s and provided very little detail on what the actual purpose was. I spent close to four hours that day trying to find where information went and belonged.

Day 2 – I spent about 7 hours attempting and correcting orders. Looking through every manual, and every spreadsheet that Frontier proved on their VFO system , I had a vauge idea on where the information was needed. Vague. One field was the ECCKT, or the circuit ID field, only 15 or so customers had that information on the records I pulled. Using that field with the circuit ID, I got my first order to confirm. I had 15 completed by the time I went home that night.

Day 3– Upon completeing those 15 orders, I was back at square one. I could not get any new orders to verify and pass through since I had no ECCKT. The error message simply outputted INVALID TN / INVALID TN 000/000-0000 . TN… What does TN mean? Oh, Telephone Number? But after trying every field that required a telephone number, the problem did not resolve. Having gotten 15 orders to successfully go through, it must be something with the circuit ID. Logic would suggest  that orders that had, had an ID passed and the ones that didn’t, didn’t. Having replaced the ECCKT with the ATN(I had reasons….) I fired off many more orders. All returned with a non-fatal error. Just invalid TN. So why doesn’t it throw an exception,  oh I don’t know maybe “INVALID ECCKT” or something useful, or tell me what page the error is on so I don’t waste my time on every page and every field looking for a problem. Having gotten frustrated I called support for CLEC’s on Frontier and soon was talking to a live person. After getting all the background information out of the way, it turned out that I was using some wrong data in some fields, and I had messed up this number with another one, and oh… I had just canceled some people’s circuits. Not their DSL line, but their whole circuit, so both voice and data. The tech started to get upset over what had happened, as I explained that this task was thrown at me and I was told to get it done. I was merely throwing information at the wall and hoping it stuck.

Our customers use to have DSL, but canceled or were switched to WiFi long ago, and we never canceled the lines, so they have been unused, so they either still have voice through Frontier, or DSL as well, so when I am told that the circuit is cancelled, I immediately think… How on Earth do I have access to cancel circuits when we never touched them in the first place? Knowing that I could go in at any time with the proper information and cancel any line anywhere does not make me feel secure about using their system or using their system for phone service. We may have a DSL line on that circuit, but why do I have the permission to remove the circuit. It took an hour to straighten out the issues, but once that was completed, I could finally get started on finishing this annoying project.

Day 4 – I spent a few hours canceling lines, and finally completing my project. Having spent much time fussing around with the constant issues of Visual Front Office and filling out pages of information, I vowed that I will never work for a company that is a Frontier CLEC again. I understand that their system works, and they have a huge database to maintain, but I can’t see how it works when I went in and accidentally canceled some peoples phone service (It was not disconnected because the date for disconnect was two weeks out, and I canceled the order before it was sent to tech) .  I am not a teleco guy, I know TCP IP stack and not this whole old school system.

After spending hours of messing up and fixing orders, I am glad to see the orders are confirmed and should be canceled. I learned a lot on this project. Not so much technical, but I learned my passion to dislike DSL ordering and just DSL in general.

Home & Business VoIP project

Home & Business VoIP project

My family for years has been robbed sideways by GTE, Verizon, and now Frontier for land line phone service. ~$50 a month for one phone line on which we only receive notifications for pills, and appointments doesn’t seem efficient. I have experimented in the past with voice over IP, but went the cheap route with syncing my Google voice account to a PBX, which often resulted in failed calls and low reliably. After asking around and taking some time to really get into this project, I signed up with Vitelity as a VoIP provider and routed my newly added phone number to my PBX at my house. My main goal with this project was to expand my knowledge on voice, expand my existing network and test priority and such, and to set up a cheap business phone line for my web hosting.

Using Trixbox, I set up my system on a small virtual server NATed in a private DMZ. After much pain and stress, I finally was able to route my phone number to my SIP box and begin testing. The setup for Trixbox was pretty straight forward, the configuring was a bit more complex.

It wasn’t that it was difficult to configure, it was the way I wanted it to work. I had a dedicated voice VLAN that was designed to be separate from the internal network, and would automatically switch to the voice VLAN when a phone was attached. Well it turns out cheap old Grandstream phones don’t support this function  so I went ahead and bought some used SIP Cisco 7942 phones and use them. Since all of my hardware was Cisco, it worked and functioned properly.

Using a DHCP option, I pushed a TFTP address to the phones for the voice VLAN,so they could grab the proper configuration on boot. While the DHCP worked flawlessly, the Endpoint provisioning manager did not. It was a pretty shotty web interface that would sometimes update, and other times no. Having to manually edit the TFTP files, so the proper data would replicate.

After finally getting the major configuration errors worked out, I was able to push phones and extensions out easily and add and remove phones without disrupting the system. The phone system has been working for about a month now with no issues, and I currently use it as my AGOA business line. It has the capabilities of a full blown enterprise phone system, but only supports a few phones at the moment. The emailing voicemail feature is handy and many more issues such as IRV and parking lot will make things nice and fun to mess around with.

XenServer Depolyment

XenServer Depolyment

I honestly believe that VMware ESXi 5.1 is the best hypervisor out there at the moment. When using it in a production environment, I never experienced slowness or downtime. But it did have it’s limitations, and not having thousands of dollars to spend on power, servers, and software such as vSphere, or vMotion, I had to look for another alternative. The major options were Citrix’s XenServer, or Microsoft’s Hyper-V. I picked Citrix over Microsoft, for obvious reasons (downtime and updates). But after about four months in production, I am starting to wonder if it was worth it to move to Citrix. I had many instances where VM’s locked up or were slow. While some issues have been resolved with updates, it just doesn’t have as much power as my VMware server did. While I am disappointed by that, there are many features that makes it worth using. I wanted to test live migration, and virtual desktops. Citrix was the only free option out there, and so I used it.

XenServer – Setup and Configuration

My deployment included two IBM x3650’s 7979 servers running XenServer 6.1. Now XenServer 6 and above allowed servers to be stored locally and used for live migration, but it is not ideal. When I was running VMware, I had 3TB of storage space local, because I had only one server, but when I implemented another host, I could no longer use local storage, so I invested in a storage server. I picked up a Dell poweredge 1950 and configured it with 1TB of storage and installed FreeNAS to run the iSCSI volume. I even had to upgrade my switch to gigabit, so I found a nice used Cisco 2970. Now when I configured the Xen Servers, they process and deal with data on the server level, but store it on the storage server using the LAN as a medium. Once XenServer was installed on the IBM servers, the process of setting them up and configuring them in a pool took place. I had a few issues with configuring the BIO’s and matching the CPU types, but once that was all set and done, the pool configuration went rather smoothly. I could now migrate servers from one to another without shutting them down.

I had a server set up, and it worked, but had no servers… Well they were backed up VMware ones. Turns out, you can import them, and they will auto convert to Xen images. This made the import rather easy, and automatic. I later found out that some machines did not convert easily, and had to be reformatted to operate properly.

XenServer – Production Environment

After four months of using XenServer, I can say that it has it’s ups and downs. It doesn’t seem like it has the power that my other hypervisor had, and locks up and gets VMs stuck in weird loops. But having live migration, and quick boot times, can be nice. I am hoping that XenServer only improves and I get to see more benefits.

This post only detailed on XenServer, not XenDesktop or other servers. Later posts will involve information about these programs.
